Mongrel Mob granted liquor licence despite police opposition

5:33 pm on 7 November 2015

The Mongrel Mob in Hastings has been granted a liquor licence for its 50th anniversary party tonight, despite police opposition.

The district licensing committee granted the gang a special on-site licence for a paddock behind the Te Aute Tavern, where about 400 people are expected to gather.

That was despite objections from the police, the district health board and the region's liquor licensing inspector.

The committee says the party would have gone ahead with or without the licence and so it focussed on minimising harm.

Three courtesy vans will be available during the evening and Maori wardens will help to monitor behaviour and drinking.
