8:12 Nights' Pundit -  Peter Clayworth

For much of the twentieth century the standard view of New Zealand history was that the  the original inhabitants of New Zealand were the Moriori, who were driven out of the mainland by a different 'race', the war-like Maori. This idea has now largely been rejected, in favour of the view that Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa/New Zealand and that the closely-related Moriori are the indigenous people of Rekohu or the Chatham Islands. The myth of a 'pre-Maori' New Zealand population does, however, continue to resurface on a regular basis.

Peter Clayworth will examine how the idea of a pre-Maori New Zealand population was actually developed and generally adopted in the early twentieth century. The "Moriori myth", along with the narrative of the Great Fleet, was the product of collaboration between Pakeha and Maori scholars, as they tried to create one migration story from many conflicting traditions. It was then promoted through the School Journal during the First World War to encourage both Pakeha and Maori patriotism.
