NZ Music Awards 2019: behind-the-scenes talent recognised at Artisan Awards

The fourth annual Artisan Awards were held tonight at Massey University in Wellington, recognising the behind-the-scenes achievements in Aotearoa’s music industry.

The six awards presented at tonight's ceremony included Best Producer, Best Engineer, Best Video, Best Album Artwork, Music Teacher of the Year and Music Manager of the Year.

Josh Fountain took out Best Producer for his work with artists including BENEE, Foley, LEISURE and MAALA.

Following Avantdale Bowling Club’s self-titled album success, Ben Lawson and Vivek Gabriel received a Tui for Best Engineer.

Released in 2018, Avantdale Bowling Club shot to #1 in just a week and is a finalist in multiple categories at the NZ Music Awards, which take place next Thursday.

Best Music Video went to creative team Vision Thing for their work on Randa’s ‘Rock Bottom’

For the second year in a row, Jaime Robertson won Best Album Artwork, this time for his artwork on Rhian Sheehan’s A Quiet Divide

The album features three alternate covers, each with artwork that perfectly emulates the harmonic and transcendent landscape of Sheehan’s music.

Music Manager of the Year was presented for the first time at the Artisan Awards and went to veteran manager Lorraine Barry who works with Dave Dobbyn, Th’ Dudes, Avantdale Bowling Club, Nomad and Milly Tabak. 

Music Teacher of the Year went to Duncan Ferguson of St Andrews College in Christchurch. 

Now in his tenth year at the school, Duncan leads the music department managing 30 co-curricular groups comprising of nearly 150 students who participate in a range of music genres including orchestra, jazz and electronica. 

The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards will be broadcast live on Three on 15 November from 8.30pm.

  • Martin Sagadin and Aldous Harding – ‘The Barrel’ (Aldous Harding)

  • Mike Braid - Raised in The Dark (Villainy)
  • Tim Harper & Dick Frizzell - Offering (Various Artists)
