AT THE MOVIES #833   WHAT’S HAPPENED TO THE OSCARS?

Simon Morris wonders why award events like this week’s Baftas and the upcoming Oscars seem to have lost their appeal.  And he looks at two films about teenagers under stress – in outer space and on a London estate.

Baftas and Oscars.   This week's Baftas, and a look back at the Academy Awards, past and present - why has the public’s interest continued to drop off, regardless of the quality of the winners?

Voyagers takes place on a spaceship entirely crewed by teenagers.   When something goes wrong, they split into warring factions.  Stars Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One), Lily-Rose Depp (The King) and Colin Farrell.

And Bafta winner (Best Casting, Rising Star) Rocks features a young teenage girl trying to look after her young brother when their mother abandons them.  Directed by Sarah Gavron (Suffragette)
