1:15 Farmers low on confidence

Concerns about finding the right staff, struggles with drought and other issues like the spreading of the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis are all factors giving farmers a bleak view of the year to come.

Federated Farmers has released its Mid-Season Farm Confidence Survey and the organisation's vice president Andrew Hoggard says compared to last year, optimism has dropped 23 percent and that doubles when farmers are asked to look forward over 2018.

They went on to the rent-a-bach market at the start of December last year and they've been very popular.

Joining us to discuss the restoration of the baches is Rangitoto Island Historic Conservation Trust's chair Elizabeth Andrew.

That is: running and picking up rubbish. And he's been busy, having picked up 4500 pieces of trash in that time. He has a Facebook page where he's promoting the clean up he is doing.

He's going for 7000 pieces in 70 days so he's well on track.
