1:15 Teenage Abuse Statistics Revealed

Statistics around teenage abuse have been revealed in a new paper, released by the New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse. The study found that nearly a third of students reported physical abuse in the past year. While 20 percent of female and nine percent of male secondary school students, reported having experienced unwanted sexual behaviour in the previous year. And it showed 21 percent of women who stayed in women's refuges were aged between 15 and 19 years old. Dr Melanie Beres of the Department of Sociology, Gender and Social Work, University of Otago is the author of the study.

Colin Morris is an unemployed programmer and describes himself as a 'deep learning enthusiast'. Until last year, he worked at Apple on the 'Proactive Siri' team. And now, he works on personal projects involving machine learning and data visualization. One of his more recent projects was an investigation into the repetitiveness of pop songs. His findings were published on the visual essay journal, The Pudding, titled Are Pop Lyrics Getting More Repetitive?

Paolo was born in Napoli, Italy and moved with his family to New Zealand at the age of eleven. He's an accomplished artist, film director, playwright and actor with a list of credits going back 20 years. Together with his wife Renee Mark, they are staging New Zealand's 15th Italian Film Festival this year. It kicks off in Christchurch in a couple of weeks, the start of its six-month New Zealand tour.

3:10 Our native birds are in trouble

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has released a hard hitting report into the state of our country;'s native birds.

Jan Wright's report, "Taonga of an island nation: Saving New Zealand's birds," has seven recommendations to government, to help rectify the situation - including a tourist tax and using genetic science to help with predator control, but also help with species survivial.

The report says 80 percent of our native bird species are in bad shape, with a third in serious trouble.
