1:15 Fighting Obesity with a plant based diet

Almost one in three adults, aged 15 years and over, is obese in New Zealand. And diabetes is our largest and fastest growing health issue we face in New Zealand. So, how can we tackle these problems with diet? A new Gisborne-based study, suggests a plant-based whole-food diet may be the answer.

Sixty-five people participated in the BROAD Study, that was published in the scientific journal Nutrition and Diabetes.

It was funded by Tairāwhiti Traditional and Complementary Therapies Research Trust, the Tairāwhiti Community Services Trust and the J N Williams Memorial Trust.

The Lead author and Gisborne GP Dr Nicholas Wright.

What exactly is, and is not, considered a native bird? And how is this decided? It seems like a simple question but it could be harder to define than we think. Whanganui Regional Museum curator of natural history, Dr Mike Dickison, is holding a talk on the matter this Thursday.

1:35 The unique flora and fauna of Madagascar

More than 80 percent of Madagascar's 14,883 plant species are found nowhere else in the world. Eric Miller is the President of the Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group, and will soon be visiting New Zealand for a Conservation Symposium at Wellington Zoo.

3:30 Expert feature: The history of English

English is a West Germanic language that came to BRitain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries AD by Germanic invaders and settlers from what is now northwest Germany, west Denmark and the Netherlands.

It has had many other influences since that time, and our expert today is Mark Amsler - an Associate Professor Comparative Literature at the School of Cultures, Languages and Linguistics at the University of Auckland. He talks through the history of English and how it came to be the language so many of us speak today.

3:10 The Subterranean World Beneath Our Feet

Just when it feels like there are few places left on the earth  unexplored, Professor Anthony Martin says all you have to do is look down to discover some of nature's deepest, darkest secrets.

For hundreds of millions of years, thousands of species have sought shelter and safety underground. And the traces of tunnels left by creatures from dinosaurs to earthworms tell the story about us, and how humans became top of the food chain.

Dr Anthony Martin's book is called The Evolution Underground: Burrows, Bunkers and the Marvelous Subterranean World Beneath Our Feet.
