Afternoons for Friday 4 November 2016
1:10 First song
1:15 Non Human Rights
The organisation that fought a two year battle to free two chimpanzees from a research centre is now turning its attention to the rights of captive elephants. The NonHuman Rights Project argued that Hercules and Leo, two chimps who were kept at Stony Brook University in New York, were autonomous and self determining beings, and therefore cannot be detained. That failed and a judge ruled that non-persons could not use habeas corpus to challenge their detentio, so the organisation is now about to file its first lawsuit on behalf of captive elephants.
Its founder, attorney Steven Wise, explains.
1:25 'Education Snobbery'
Our guest is tackling 'education snobbery' and celebrating the trades. Today, 10 of the country's top young carpentry apprentices, are competing in a six-hour practical challenge, to take out The Apprentice of the Year award. It's been held at The Cloud in Auckland. And Registered Master Builders chief executive, David Kelly, is there.
1:35 Critter of the Week
As Kermit once said “It ain’t easy being green”, or brown with black markings for that matter, which is the colour of our wee Maud Island frogs. Hopefully things just got a tiny bit easier as this month Maud Island was officially designated Predator Free - after mice were eradicated again after an incursion in 2013.
