2:10 Lord Baden-Powell Desk - Finn McCahon Jones - A magnificent desk, built by a renowned cabinet maker as a gift from the City of Auckland to a decorated British Solider and founder of the Scouting movement, is returning to Auckland after more than 100 years. In 1900, thousands of Aucklanders dug into their pockets to pay for an escritoire ( Es cree twa) desk to honor Major-General Robert Baden Powell, who was instrumental in the defence of Mafeking during the Boer War.r.
The Auckland Museum acquired the desk from the Baden-Powell family with money from Charles Disney Art Trust. It is on display at the museum now. Finn McCahon Jones is the Auckland Museum's applied arts and design associate curator.
