100 years ago today, August 14th 1913, a prominent Taranaki farmer, his daughter and their carriage driver were brutally murdered in a crime known in the district as the Kaimata Tragedy.  The headlines at the time screamed: Cold blooded crime on pretty homestead.  Edward "ted" Julian had been a farmer in the area for several years.
He was looking to downsize his farming property and arranged to swap properties with Kaimata dairy farmer and New Zealand Farmers Union treasurer Frederick Virgin. But when the day of the exchange arrived... Virgin attacked Julian, his driver, and his three children as they slept. Dorothy Julian, and her brother Verner were 16 and 17 and they survived the attack. New Plymouth businessman, Bryce Barnett is the grandson of Dorothy Julian.
