2:20 Sir Edmund Hillary's signature has been rediscovered at Mid Canterbury's Double Hut - Lew Shaw
More than 60 years ago, an Auckland beekeeper scrawled his name on a hut used by trampers and mountaineers in Mid Canterbury. He was staying in the Double Hut in 1951, a three-hour walk from Lake Heron, while preparing to climb nearby Mt Taylor. He was in training for another climb that would be celebrating around the world. For years, mystery surrounded the pencilled words... Ed Hillary 1951. Now.. after years of searching.. the name has been found. Tramper Lew Shaw has rediscovered the signature and he is on the line with us now from Ashburton

2:25 Food parcels to the UK - Ross Harrison
Around the same time Sir Ed was signing his name to the hut in Mid Canterbury... Southland school were busy with a project that would leave a lasting impression too.
A few weeks ago, we spoke to Rodger Button, originally from Norwich in England, about the kindness New Zealand school children showed him 60 years ago that has not been forgotten. Rodger was just 8 years, and a student at Avenue Road School when the war ended. Food shortages and rationing were still very common. But parcels from school children in Invercargill . filled with tins of fruit and meat gave them hope and encourgement. Roger and his wife Valerie are coming to New Zealand in December and he told us he would like to meet anyone from Invercargill who sent the parcels so he can thank them in person.
We put Rodger in touch with Ross Harrison.. who was a schoolboy in Dipton who remembers sending those parcels to England. Now they are going to meet.
2:30 Reading
We re-join New Zealand nurse Lisa French Blaker, recalling the bewildering first few days of her volunteer assignment with Medecins Sans Frontieres during the civil war in Darfur.
