Men at centre of French Polynesia strike detained over alleged rape

Reports from French Polynesia say four men at the centre of a recent hotel strike on Moorea have been detained for questioning over an alleged rape.

The union O Oe Te Oe Rima launched a strike last month, demanding the four men be reinstated.

They had been laid off after another hotel employee claimed she had been raped by the four men several months ago.

Tahiti Nui TV said the police have now taken them in for questioning.

The woman, who refused to return to work, was persuaded to lodge a complaint with the police.

Women's group Vahine Orama said it was scandalous that the union was trying to apply pressure when a crime was alleged to have taken place.
