There is continuing ashfall and flights are still suspended into Papua New Guinea's West New Britain Province after the Mt Ulawun volcano erupted earlier this week.

More than 5000 people had to be evacuated after Mt Ulawun, one of the country's most active volcanoes, erupted on Wednesday, hurling ash some 17km into the air.

The Post Courier reported the provincial government has since declared a state of emergency and allocated $US738,000 to assist people affected by the disaster.

Air Niugini also announced a continued suspension of flights into Hoskins airport, stranding hundreds of travellers who were forced to find alternative travel options.

While the Rabaul Volcano Observatory said the volcano has quietened down, those who had evacuated were being urged to stay put for at least another two weeks until authorities know for sure that the volcano has settled.
