The Post Courier quoted local police commander Chief Sergeant Herman Birengka who called it a milestone for central Bougainville.

The former militants, in Kieta district, made the handover in line with the requirement that Bougainville be weapons free in time for the referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea in October.

Local UN representative Clyde Peris said he was impressed with the support the ex-combatants have shown for the peace process and the referendum.
