The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says the threat posed by a large earthquake in Papua New Guinea this morning has passed.

It had earlier warned that waves as high as 30 centimetres were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre in East New Britain.

The magnitude-7 quake struck early this morning, at a depth of 33 kilometres.

People in the area said it was strong enough to wake them, but there were no reports of damage so far.
