It comes after President Trump had earlier approved the islands' request for an emergency declaration a day after Typhoon Mangkhut hit Rota.

With the major disaster declaration, the CNMI Governor Ralph Torres said the territory will now be eligible for individual assistance and public assistance.

Individual Assistance comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and is for those who have sustained losses due to disasters, while Public Assistance is aid geared toward government organisations and some non government agencies.

Mr Torres said preliminary damage assessments of public facilities estimated damage would exceed $US3.3 million on Rota, Saipan, and Tinian.

Meanwhile, Mr Torres said the CNMI Legislature is committing $US1 million dollars to the typhoon recovery.
