Kiribati's main trust fund is close to reaching its goal of a billion Australian dollars.

The finance minister Teuea Toatu said the Revenue Equalization Reserve Fund (RERF) remains very strong and is likely to reach its target amount before 2020.

Dr Toatu said the fund is now at $AUD997 million which is about $US733 million.

In 2017 the president Taneti Maamau said the trust funds would be used for short term climate financing.

The RERF was created in 1956.
