The 132-metre long ship had run onto the reef of Raroia atoll after drifting because of a broken engine.

After being towed to Papeete for repairs of its hull, a special tug from the United States is now taking the vessel to South Korea.

The ship, carrying zinc, broke down on its voyage from the United States to Australia.

The captain of the ship is facing charges in French Polynesia of failing to communicate the engine failure which within two days saw the laden ship drift onto the reef.

The incident only became known when locals saw the stranded ship, which was carrying zinc from the United States to Australia.
