Fiji is due for an election this year, the second since Mr Bainimarama came to power in a landslide victory after eight years ruling by decree.

In a speech opening a meeting of the Tailevu Provincial Council he asked council members to encourage people to register to vote.

He also told them not to allow anyone to "seep fear" in their communities or "attack the bonds of nationhood".

Mr Bainimarama warned people to be careful as the election approached as he said many opposition politicians would be coming with the same doomsday predictions and lies which he said they had come with in 2014.

He told the council many of the politicians were too concerned with their own community politics.
