New Caledonia to tighten drink drive laws

The Congress of New Caledonia has decided to tighten drink drive laws as part of efforts to improve road safety.

For drivers who haven't had a licence for two years yet there will zero tolerance for alcohol.

The measure was adopted unanimously.

Ninety percent of fatal road accident in New Caledonia involve drink drivers, many of whom not wearing seatbelts.

Per capita, New Caledonia has a road toll four times higher than France.

Figures also show that about a third of accidents involve drivers without a licence.
