A 19-year-old man in New Caledonia has been jailed for six and a half years for involuntary homicide after a fatal hit-and-run incident on a pedestrian crossing in Noumea.
Last August, the man had run over a 23-year-old woman who died of her injuries in November.
He and his passenger, who has been jailed for eight months for his involvement in the hit and run, were only identified three months after the incident.

The court heard that they had been drinking before driving to town on the night of the accident.
It also heard that in September he had been stopped for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Road fatalities in New Caledonia are four times the rate in France.
