Reports from Wallis and Futuna say one of the territory's kings has been fined by the courts over his role in blocking the airport in Hihifo in 2015.

The public broadcaster reported that the king Tominiko Halagahu of Wallis had been ordered to pay $US30 a day for a year.

Several of his ministers had also been fined but they were acquitted of a charge of obstructing an aircraft.

The 2015 airport dispute involved disgruntled locals who blocked the island's airport for more than a week.

The blockade ended with the French prefect assuring that the judicial process against the chiefs would be abandoned.

The president of the territorial assembly, Mika Kulimoetoke, had expressed concern that the prefect interfered in matters of custom.

A king and the chiefs are part of the territorial administration and on the payroll of the French republic.
