Tonga's Ministry of Health has confirmed two cases of typhoid fever on the main island, Tongatapu.

Typhoid is transmitted by ingesting water and food contaminated by faeces or urine of patients or animal carriers.

The Public Health Division is investigating the cases which are two males aged 17 and 21 from the same household.

On Friday, they were both reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The diagnoses were made through blood culture results, the health ministry said.

"They both developed fever and other symptoms two weeks before [being] admitted to Vaiola Hospital on 16 and 17 January respectively," the ministry said in a statement.

"All contacts had no symptoms and have [been] put under surveillance with health advice also provided.

"At present, the evidence suggests a domestic cluster of infection possibly with intra-familial transmission - investigations are ongoing."

The health ministry is urging the public to remain calm and follow advice from the health professionals on the ground.

It said preventative measures include ensuring drinking water is safe, and handling and storing raw and cooked food separately to avoid cross contamination.
