A meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Guam wants CNMI residents to conserve water as the region experiences the current El Nino dry phase.
Chip Guard said the drought impact in the Northern Marianas and Guam could last until August.
He said some parts of Micronesia were under drought level 2 or D2, which meant severe drought and that crop or pasture losses were likely, water shortages common, and water restrictions may be imposed.
Aside from practicing water conservation due to the drying up of aquifers, Mr Guard said grass fires as a result of the dry conditions were also possible.
