A lawmaker in American Samoa says the Department of Education has decided to reinstate funding for the sports program for the new school year, which opens in the middle of August.
Representative Larry Sanitoa met with Education Department officials late last week to discuss several issues including the budget for the sports program, which had been reduced from 170,000 US dollars to only 30,000 US dollars for the new school year.
In a letter to Education officials recapping the results of the meeting, Sanitoa says he was elated to learn that the sports program's budget has now been reinstated.
He says the American Samoa Governor was also supportive of the move.
