Blue Smoke: The birth of New Zealand Pop
Radio and New Zealand pop
Chris Bourke looks at the impact of radio, and considers the influence of broadcasters such as Arthur Pearce (Turntable) and Bob Bothamley. The latter was NBS's "head of dance", who created the radio band system in which the top New Zealand bandleaders were featured each week presenting new arrangements with the best local musicians. The music includes RNZ Sound Archive recordings of Julian Lee, Crombie Murdoch, Don Richardson and Lew Campbell. The programme also looks at the shift in pop radio from the conservative approach of ZB in the 1950s to the dawn of pop radio as we understand it now, using archive clips of the The Lever Hit Parade (RNZ)
