Two civilians and one deputy are injured and the suspected shooter fatally shot, following a standoff at a sheriff's office in Idaho, officials say.

The suspected gunman entered the lobby of the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office in Wallace and opened fire, Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy said at a Friday evening (local time) news conference.

Authorities responded to a report of shots fired at around 2.40pm Friday, the sheriff's office said.

An officer-involved shooting followed, and the suspect was pronounced dead at 4.15pm, he said.

The injuries of the three people shot were described as minor, according to Eddy, who said two female victims were shot in the leg and a deputy received a gunshot wound to the ear.

Wallace, Idaho, is about 112 kilometres east of Spokane, Washington.
