Logging ban imposed in Nepal

12:06 pm on 20 June 2010

The government of Nepal has announced a two-month ban on all logging.

Forests minister Deepak Bohara told the BBC that an increase in the number of trees being felled in forests in a lowland area, had led to the ban.

He said the ministry for forests has also begun an investigation into officials in areas where deforestation is rampant.

Around a quarter of all land in Nepal is under forest. Much of this is managed by community projects.
