The ban has affected two New Zealand journalists, Fairfax's Michael Field and TV One's Barbara Dreaver.

The Times quoted the country's Department of Information, which said in a statement any journalist would be free to visit the country and report without restriction once they had been accredited by the department.

Mr Field said he was yet to receive official notification his ban has been lifted.

"The statement that we're talking about has come from third party sources with no name attached to it.

"So I will immediately begin ... asking the the Fiji Ministry of Information 'is this this real'."

The department has not responded to an RNZ request for comment.
