Fatal garment factory fire in Italy

5:42 am on 2 December 2013

Five people were killed and two others seriously injured in a fire in a garment factory early on Sunday in Prato, a town just north of Florence, Italy.

The factory was in an industrial zone known for a number of Chinese-owned textile businesses.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known but the flames are thought to have led to the collapse of a portion of the building housing a dormitory.

The two injured people have grave burns. A third person, a woman, had smoke inhalation but was not considered to be in a serious condition.
