Lorde wasn’t offered a solo Grammys performance, but male nominees were

Don’t expect to see Lorde sing at the Grammy Awards.

After a dispute with the awards’ producers, the pop star has decided she won’t be performing at all, according to entertainment website TMZ. 

“Sources close to Lorde tell us ... the singer decided not to play after a heated back and forth with the Grammys about her involvement in the show,” TMZ said.

Lorde was reported to be the only Album of the Year nominee at the Grammys not offered a solo spot. The other four nominees, all men, were asked to perform their own solo tracks. Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Bruno Mars are all expected to perform, but Jay Z declined.    

The Grammy producers did reportedly offer Lorde a slot singing as part of a Tom Petty tribute on the song ‘American Girl’. As Variety pointed out, this would have been an odd fit for the Auckland phenom.

Lorde is also not expected to appear on the red carpet, according to TMZ, though she may still attend the awards.

Lorde’s mum, Sonja Yeliich last week tweeted a picture of a newspaper clipping about the awards, writing: “this says it all”.  

In the picture, a circle was drawn around a paragraph that stated: "Of the 899 people to be nominated for Grammy awards in the past six years, only nine per cent were women. (This year, Lorde is the only woman nominated for album of the year; she is not scheduled to perform.)"

Four years ago, when she was aged 17, Lorde won Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her breakthrough song ‘Royals’. She also performed the song.

The 60th Grammy Awards are being held in New York.
