Laneway Festival: Auckland’s leg of Laneway Festival returns to Silo Park this Monday with a line-up that includes Hudson Mohawke, Chvrches, Grimes, Vince Staples and Beach House. The Others (Lane) Way: In preparation for Laneway, Flying Out are throwing an all-ages afternoon show this Sunday with Soccer Practice, Mermaidens, Guardian Singles and Wormstar. It’ll be going down 1-5pm at the Flying Out basement on Pitt St. Entry is by donation.
The (Other) Others (Lane) Way: Yup, there’s more. While they’re getting back together for Laneway itself, lauded 90s band High Dependency Unit will preview their set with a show at the Kings Arms this Sunday evening with experimental Auckland band Avoid! Avoid. Entry is free with a Laneway ticket, or – for those not heading to the festival – you can grab tickets at Under The Radar.
French For Rabbits: Local dream-pop act French For Rabbits play a one-off intimate show this Saturday at Christchurch venue the Darkroom. As they put it themselves, it’ll be their last performance “before disappearing off to finish university degrees and an album in other locations”. Tickets are available from Under The Radar.
Mermaidens: After a short hiatus, “dark witch rock” act Mermaidens have announced their return with a brand new single - ‘Under The Mountain II’ – and details of a full-length debut, which is set to drop this March. To celebrate the single release, the Wellington-based outfit have also lined up four shows across Hamilton and Auckland (including the one mentioned above) over the coming weekend. Heavy and LVJ: Emerging Auckland acts Heavy and LVJ are teaming up for a joint show this Friday at newish Ponsonby bar George. Consider it a prelude of sorts to their full New Zealand tour that begins next month. Things kick off at 8pm and entry is free.
Poor You Poor Me: After three years, Auckland six-piece band Poor You Poor Me are re-forming for a one-off album release show this Sunday at The Wine Cellar. “This will be your ONLY CHANCE to see the band before they disappear back into the pages of the NZ Rock history books,” they say. Support on the night comes from Emily Edrosa and The Deadly Nightshades.
