Alison Thom - a social worker and manager of Ngati Horahia, Ngati Toki - has been chosen by Tuhoronuku, along with Joe Davis, a researcher and Maori development specialist of Ngati Kopaki.

The third member is Hemi Toia of Te Mahurehure, an experienced public servant and currently the chief executive of Te Runanga o Ngati Rarua.

The chair of Tuoronuku Independent Mandated Authority, Sonny Tau, said as the negotiations began, it would be possible to make more appointments if required.

Tuoronuku's Trust Deed allows for up to six negotiators.

Some hapu are critical of the way Tuhoronuku was approved to enter negotiations with the Crown.

Those sub-tribes recently gained an urgent hearing at the Waitangi Tribunal, and are now waiting a for a recommendation to be issued.

They also are unhappy with Tuhoronuku for pressing ahead and choosing a negotiating time while the Tribunal considers the case.
