More than 500 submissions to Wanganui District Council have not only called for restrictions on the sale of legal highs, but an outright ban.
In August last year, Nga Tai o Te Awa encouraged as many people as possible to make submissions on the draft policy proposed by Wanganui District Council.
The council received 680 submissions - which is a record for any policy that the council has put out for feedback.
85 percent of the submissions agreed that the sale of legal highs should be restricted and not be sold on Whanganui's main street, Victoria Avenue.
The Community Action on Youth and Drugs co-ordinator for Nga Tai o Te Awa, Julie Herewini, said an overwhelming majority of those submissions, however, wanted legal highs to be totally banned.
She said it was a good result and most of the people who made submissions not only wanted synthetic cannabis to be restricted, but their preference was for a total ban altogether.
But, Ms Herewini says because of government legalisation Nga Tai o Te Awa understands that the Wanganui District Council is unable to ban them outright.
