MetService gives Whanganui an 'h'

8:10 am on 16 October 2014

Following pressure from the Maori Language Commission, MetService has added the letter 'h' to Whanganui on its weather maps.

The forecaster has made the changes more than four years after the Government ordered all Crown agencies to alter the spelling of the river city.

MetService spokesperson Jacqui Bridges acknowledges better links with Te Taura Whiri would have resolved the issue earlier.

She says they did not have close communications with the Maori Language Commission, and didn't know the spelling change was something being driven by the commission.

Ms Bridges says MetService forecasters are also told to properly pronounce Whanganui.
