The Maori Language Commission says people are using social media to criticise poor Maori pronunciation on air.
It's focusing on improving the pronunciation of Maori names and places as part of this year's Maori Language Week, which ends on Sunday.
It's the job of the commission, Te Taura Whiri I te Reo Maori, to follow up formal complains about the mispronunciation of Maori words on television and radio.
Instead of making formal complaints, chief executive Glenis Philip-Barbara said people tend to reach for twitter or Facebook to express their distaste, or offer advice.
She said that was the case for The X-Factor on TV3, which was pulled up on social media for mispronouncing the name of contestant, Whenua Patuwai.
Ms Philip-Barbara said the pronunciation on the show has improved and it's good to see the public voice being used constructively.
