Batsmen Ed Cowan and Shaun Marsh and pace bowler Ben Hilfenhaus have been drafted into a 13-strong Australian squad for the first cricket test against India starting on Boxing Day in Melbourne.

Cowan has forced his way into the squad for the first time after scoring centuries in his past four games, including one against the tourists in their current game against an Australian Chairman's eleven.

Marsh returns after recovering from a back injury suffered during the recent tour of South Africa.

And Tasmanian fast bowler Hilfenhaus has been recalled after some strong recent form in the Australian domestic competition.

Batsmen Phil Hughes and Usman Khawaja were dropped from the team which lost the second Test to New Zealand in Hobart earlier this month.

Allrounder Shane Watson and pace bowlers Ryan Harris weren't considered because of fitness concerns.
