The New Zealand Breakers' decision not to attend the Australian National Basketball League awards ceremony because of Thursday night's opening match in the semi-final series has proved prescient.

The Most Valuable Player player award went to Wollongong guard Gary Ervin and despite winning the minor premiership the Breakers featured in only one category with import Gary Braswell the best sixth man.

However MVP nominees Kirk Penney and Gary Wilkinson did make the first All Stars team.

Penney has averaged an equal league leading 20.1 points per game for the Breakers, helping lead them to their best-ever record.

And in his first full season in the NBL, Wilkinson averaged 16.1 points per game and 5.3 rebounds ass well as shooting an impressive 54.9 per cent from the field.

The Breakers play Perth at the North Shore Events Centre in the first of the best of three semi-finals series,
