The France prop Thomas Domingo's rugby World Cup participation chances are severely compromised, according to his French Top 14 club Clermont after the player suffered knee ligament damage on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Frenchman's season came to an end when he ruptured cruciate ligaments in his right knee during the 41-13 rout of Biarritz.

After undergoing scans Domingo will go under the knife in the coming days according to Clermont, the reigning Top 14 champions who are battling to qualify for the crucial final phase of the competition.

France coach Marc Lievremont is set to announce a 30-man World Cup squad on May the 11th.

Domingo's injury could give Lievremont a selection headache ahead of the World Cup, to be held in New Zealand from September as Domingo's replacement on the left side, Fabien Barcella, is currently recovering from an operation on his Achilles tendon.
