Timaru rider Shane Archbold has won the fourth medal for New Zealand at the Track Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands, the 22-year-old taking the silver medal in the men's omnium.
Archbold was fourth going into the final 1000 metre time trial but produced a personal best and the only sub-one minute four second ride to boost him to second place behind surprise winner Michael Freiberg of Australia in the gruelling six-event category at the Apeldoorn Velodrome.
It brought New Zealand's tally to four medals to equal the record haul from last year in Copenhagen.
Alison Shanks won silver in the women's individual pursuit on the third day of finals, leading world record holder Sarah Hammer of the United States until the final 250 metres of their three-kilometre final before the American unleashed a blinding finish to pip the New Zealander by 29/100ths of a second in the gold medal ride at the Apeldoorn Velodrome.
While it was a bitter blow for the 2009 world champion from Dunedin, Shanks was pleased with her performance in a well-judged ride.
Shanks' New Zealand team-mate Jaime Nielson was beaten by Lithuania's Vilija Sereikaite for the individual pursuit bronze, finishing fourth in her first-ever medal ride at a world championships.
Eddie Dawkins was sixth in the keirin, won by Australian Shane Perkins.
