The Highlanders first five-eighth Robbie Robinson will go before an internal disciplinary hearing after spending the night in a police cell following his side's Super Rugby loss to the the Crusaders in Dunedin.

The 21-year-old was pepper-sprayed by police, arrested on Saturday night and held in a cell after being involved in a scuffle while walking home.

The Highlanders general manager Roger Clark says he was released later in the morning and wasn't charged but he will appear before a New Zealand rugby union disciplinary hearing.

With the Highlanders having a bye this weekend in the competition Clark says that's unlikely to happen until next week.
