The New Zealand women's football team has been beaten 4-1 by the Netherlands in their opening match at the Cyprus Cup in Nicosia.

Substitute Sarah Gregorius netted New Zealand's only goal 15 minutes from time, but by that stage the Ferns were already trailing three first half Dutch goals.

The New Zealanders are preparing for the FIFA Women's World Cup in June.

In the day's other Group B encounter France beat New Zealand's next opponent Switzerland 2-nil while England and Mexico, who the Ferns meet at the World Cup both notched impressive results with England beating Italy 2-nil and Mexico holding Russia to a nil-all draw.

New Zealand plays Switzerland in Larnaca on Saturday morning.
