The New Zealand women's squash team has beaten Malaysia to finish top of their group at the World Teams Championship in Palmerston North.

The 5th seeded New Zealanders beat the 4th seeded Malaysians 2-1, with 31-year-old mother Shelley Kitchen sealing the tie with a 3-nil victory over world number 21 Delia Arnold.

This is Kitchen's first international event since the birth of her daughter in February and it will be her last before retirement.

Commonwealth Games star Joelle King won her match, but number one Jacklyn Hawkes was beaten by world number one Nicol David.

New Zealand now play 6th seeds France in the quarter-finals while Malaysia play 3rd seeds Egypt.

There was also an upset in Pool A, with ninth seeded USA grabbing a spot in the last eight with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands.

The quarter-final draw is England against Ireland, Australia against the USA, Egypt against Malaysia and New Zealand against France.
