The German sports car manufacturer Porsche has revealed it's considering a return to Formula One and racing under their own name as they last did in the 1960s, a German newspaper has reported.

The Financial Times Deutschland says Porsche, who's the majority shareholder in Volkswagen, is considering plans to return to Formula One.

Porsche competed in Grand Prix races with Formula One cars from 1958 to 1964.

The Stuttgart-based firm also provided the engines for McLaren-TAG in the 1980s, and also helped them win world titles in the manufacturers category in 1984 and 1985.

Porsche has played no role in Formula One since 1991.
