Melbourne Storm star Eli Katoa will miss the 2026 NRL season, as he continues his recovery from headknocks that forced him to have brain surgery.

The former Warriors back-rower copped head knocks while on test duty with Tonga during the season-ending Pacific Championships.

Katoa collided with teammate Lehi Hopoate before a test against New Zealand at Eden Park and then copped two more headknocks during the game.

He suffered seizure activity on the sideline and was taken to hospital, where he had surgery on a brain bleed.

The 25-year-old remained in Auckland for weeks, before returning to Melbourne, where he underwent further testing under the care of specialists in hospital.

He has since been released from hospital and will continue his recovery from home.

"Eli's health and wellbeing remain our No.1 priority," Storm chief executive Justin Rodski said. "It is great to have him home safely, and under the care of our club doctor and local specialists.

"He is improving each day and looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation from home."
