The Football Ferns have been beaten 1-0 by Mexico in game one of their two-match international friendly series.
Mexico scored at the 10-minute mark through Aaliyah Farmer and were able to keep New Zealand at arms length from then on.
Ranked 33rd in the world, New Zealand struggled to find scoring opportunities against the 29th-ranked side at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City.
They face Mexico again on Monday, before facing the United States, who are ranked second in the world, next Thursday.
