The Black Caps have gone down in their T20 series against England after the final match was rained out with a no result declared on Thursday.

New Zealand needed to win to draw the series but persistent rain in Auckland meant they never got the chance.

It comes after the first T20 was also washed out at Hagley Oval.

England's 65-run win in the second match was all that was needed as the visitors kicked off their tour with a series win.

Just 3.4 overs were played in the third match, with New Zealand's batters sent in.

Opener Tim Seifert made a promising start with 23 not out, including two sixes, while Tim Robinson was the only wicket to fall for just two runs.

The Black Caps were left stranded on 38/1 as umpires considered an eight-over match instead.

But the rain returned and with that, New Zealand's hopes of levelling the series were dashed.

Both teams will now travel to Mount Maunganui for the ODI series-opener on Sunday.
