Forecast temperatures of close to 40 degrees in the Hunter Valley on Sunday, have seen the Wellington Phoenix women's match against Newcastle transferred.

The game was due to be played at Maitland 160km noth of Sydney but has been moved to Newcastle on the New South Wales coast.

The temperature at Maitland Regional Sportsground is forecast to be 38 degrees for the late afternoon kick off.

That would trigger a potential delay or postponement under the Australian Professional Leagues heat policy.

The weather at Newcastle 30km away is forecast to be mostly cloudy with and 30 degrees.

A-League officials say the the original kick-off time (5pm AEDT) will remain in place with the match to have mandatory drink-cooling breaks although they will monitor the forecast for the remainder of the week and will delay kick-off if necessary.
