Manchester United have begun their European Champions League football title defence with a nil-all home draw with Spain's Villarreal.

The return of Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who came on as a 62nd minute substitute after recovering from ankle surgery, failed to spark the home side who dominated possession.

The other match in group E also finished in a nil-all draw between Celtic and Aalborg of Denmark.

In other matches Arsenal scored late to draw 1-all at Dynamo Kiev, Bayern Munich beat Steaua Bucharest 1-nil, Lyon and Fiorentina drew 2-all, Porto beat Fenerbache 3-1, Juventus beat Zenit St Peresburg 1-nil and Real Madrid beat Borisov of Belarus 1-nil.
