Manchester United co-chairman Joel Glazer says the club "apologise unreservedly for the unrest" caused by the proposed League.

The rare public comment from the American came after Liverpool owner John W Henry apologised to supporters.

United, Liverpool and four other Premier League sides withdrew from the ESL yesterday after a backlash.

"We failed to show enough respect for its deep-rooted traditions," Glazer said in an open letter to fans.

"Manchester United has a rich heritage and we recognise our responsibility to live up to its great traditions and values."

Henry took sole responsibility for the "unnecessary negativity", saying: "In this endeavour I've let you down.

"The project put forward was never going to stand without the support of the fans.

"Over these 48 hours you were very clear that it would not stand. We heard you. I heard you."

Gilpin was speaking as World Rugby outlined a four-year strategic plan until 2025 that includes tackling what he describes as "the three Cs of Covid, calendar and concussion".

The international, club and community games were put on hold last year due to Covid-19.

And Gilpin said: "We think from the work we've done over the last six to nine months through our member national unions that probably the overall damage is in the region of £1billion.

"We say that because we've worked, obviously, at the elite level of the game to understand the impacts of Covid and huge revenue drop-off have had.

"We don't know, of course, what the damage really is in the community game, and I don't think probably anyone does at this stage.

"What we have seen in countries that are starting to open up in the community is that players young and old are flooding back to rugby clubs in almost record numbers.

Ninth seed Fognini was trailing 6-0 4-4 against Spain's Zapata Miralles when a line judge reported him for using foul language following a foot fault.

Fognini had been given a warning earlier in the match and when the chair umpire informed him of the decision to default him, the 33-year-old stormed off the court.

"I didn't tell him anything," Fognini shouted, breaking his racket at the net and throwing it away in frustration as he left the court.

Fognini is no stranger to on-court controversy. He was handed a provisional suspension for two Grand Slam tournaments and fined $150,000 for an outburst at the 2017 U.S. Open.

Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart will become the first female official to be involved in European Championship matches after UEFA confirmed the list of referees for this year's tournament.

Frappart was not named among the 18 referees to take charge of the 51 Euro 2020 games but she will be involved as a support match official, working either as a fourth official or a reserve assistant referee.

The European Championship, pushed back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held from June 11-July 11 in cities in 12 countries.
